BETTENDORF - Harry Lee Keller, of Bettendorf, Iowa, died Wednesday, July 6, 2005, at Riverview Manor, Pleasant Valley. Celebration of Life services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, July 9, at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery, Davenport. Memorials may be made to Grace Lutheran Church, Davenport. Mr. Keller was born February 27, 1917, in Sabula, Iowa, to Guy E. and Alice J. (Swails) Keller. Harry graduated from Davenport High in 1935, then turned down a college scholarship to work and help support his parents during the depression. He married Lois Genevieve Anderson on May 17, 1941, in Willmar, Minnesota. She died in 1997. He was a Staff Sergeant for the U.S. Army in Germany following World War II. For 37 years he worked at the Rock Island Arsenal, beginning as a tool and die maker and retiring in 1975 as a Quality Assurance Specialist. He previously worked for the Rock Island Lines railroad and the Victor Animatograph Company. After retirement, Harry and Lois traveled in their motor home throughout the U.S. until buying a winter home in Brooksville, Florida. Harry was an avid sports participant and spectator. He played softball and ran track, and played center for the Davenport High basketball team in '34 and '35. He refereed girls and boys basketball for many years in Eastern Iowa. He bowled for Grace Lutheran for many years and golfed whenever he could. He loved watching sports of all kinds on TV and was a Chicago Cubs fan, "when they were winning." He was especially softhearted toward animals, spoiling his dogs with bike rides and treats and feeding all sorts of wildlife daily. His memberships included Grace Lutheran Church where he volunteered as Sunday School superintendent and teacher, council man, head usher and bass in the choir. Survivors include daughters, Eileen L. (Wayne) Brouhard and Kathleen J. (Russell) Finkler, all of Davenport, and Lori Keller (James) Morrissey, of Bishop Hill, Illinois; son, Lynn H. (Joyce) Keller, of Davenport; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and special friend, Phyllis Rowland. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon L. Moenck, in 2004, and his sister, Edith E. Dhuyvetter.
