Leona Keenan Bettencourt, 91, died of a stroke September 6, 2006 in Sacramento. To all whom she loved and who loved her, her life was a fulfillment of the Irish Blessing ''May the hand of a friend always be near you.'' In the beauty industry for more than 60 years, she was to each customer a trusted friend and confidante. Always with a dog at her side, she helped found Sacramento Pets in Need. Married for 56 years to Lawrence Manuel Bettencourt, who died in 1994, she is survived by son Lawrence Keenan Bettencourt of Clovis. She was the beloved ''Auntie Prunes'' to family members of Dori and Rudy Zanin of Redding, and Gordon and Barbara Keenan of Meadow Vista. Funeral arrangements are being made by Chapel of the Valley, Citrus Heights 916-797-1448. A service at St. Mary's Cemetery 6700 21st Ave. will be held on Saturday, September 16th at 11am. Interment will be at El Carmelo Cemetery, Pacific Grove. CA. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Guide Dogs for the Blind or by planting a favorite tree or flower in one's own yard.
