Mark A. Keefer, Jr., 88, passed away Saturday, March 16, 2013, at Bethlehem Woods Nursing Home, Fort Wayne, surrounded by his loving family and caregivers. Born in Fort Wayne on August 8, 1924 to Mark Sr. and Marie Keefer, he graduated from North Side High School in 1942. Mark graduated from Purdue University with a degree in mechanical engineering. He retired from his engineering career at Magnavox in 1989. Mark loved to play golf with his best friend Jack at Willow Ridge Golf Course, and played duplicate bridge at the Fort Wayne Bridge Center, where he was a Master Player. He was a Ranger in the United States Army during World War II, and climbed the cliffs of Normandy during the invasion of Point du Hoc when he was 19 years old. Mark remained an active member of the Ranger Battalion's Association throughout her life. He was the sweetest and bravest man you could have ever known, and the best father ever. His daughter Heidi was honored to accompany him as his Guardian on the HONOR FLIGHT, Spring 2012, to Washington D.C. to visit the WWII Memorial. His memorable words during that visit were "I never knew I was so famous". He was a member of American Legion Post 47, American Society of Mechanical Engineers,serving as Past President of the Fort Wayne Chapter, and Good Shepherd United Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife of 67 years Charlene M. (Brown) Keefer, son Dr. Matthew A. (Wynne) Keefer, Zionsville, IN; daughters, Suzi (Jeff) Michell, Arlington, TX, and Heidi Rae of Fort Wayne; brother J. Edward (Virginia) Keefer, Fort Wayne, and sister Barbara (Roger) Williams, SC; sister-in-law Norma (Harold) Fisher, 11 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his oldest son Mark A. Keefer III, brother Dick Keefer, and sister Evelyn Barrett. Memorial service will be 1 p.m. Monday March 25, 2013 at D.O. McComb & Sons Maplewood Park Funeral Home, 4017 Maplecrest Road. A gathering celebrating his life will be held immediately following at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the Disabled American Veteran's or Lewy Body Dementia.
