Helen Crawford Kearney
Loving Wife, Mother and
Helen Crawford Kearney was born April 10, 1923, in Humansville, Mo., the daughter of John and Rosa Belle (Selby) Crawford. She graduated from Humansville High School in 1940 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from the University of Missouri in 1946.
She married her high school sweetheart, Dale, after he retuned from serving with the Marines in WWII on Midway Island. Following that, they moved to Independence, Mo. where thier son Jim was born, then to Cleburne Texas, Enid, OK, Murpysboro, Ill, where thier son Billy was born, then they moved on to Edwardsville, Ill., then to Memphis TN., all while Dale was manager of the F.W. Woolworth stores in these towns.
In 1964 Helen and Dale set out on their own and purchased the Ben Franklin Store in Lawrence KS, where they owned and operated it for 26 years until 1991. They ventured out in 1976 and purchased (2) Pier 1 Associate Stores in Lawrence and Topeka that they owned until 1998, when they "officially" retired.
She was a member and past president of both the Soroptimist Club and Kappa Kappa Iota teachers sorority. She was a strong Christian and had been a member and actively involved in all the Southern Baptist Churches she attended since childhood. She taught Sunday School and played piano and the organ in churches in Illinois, Missouri, Texas, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Kansas. She taught 3rd grade in the Memphis school system at Graceland Elementary School.
Dale & Helen had two sons, Jim Kearney of Lawrence, and Billy Kearney of Wichita and two grandsons, Ryan and Shane. Another infant son, Danny had preceeded her in death in 1952.
She was a fun loving lady who respected others, she loved her family, loved to laugh and make others laugh. She made any situation a fun, enjoyable encounter. She also enjoyed traveling, playing piano, entertaining and delivering Meals-on-Wheels. She loved crocheting, reading, using her computer, collecting things and doting over her 2 grandsons.
She will be sorely missed by those of us she left behind, but we are comforted in the knowledge that she is with the Lord that she believed in with all her heart and soul..
We will always LOVE You and forever miss you!
