According to old cemetery records, he died of "old age" at age 76 and was interred in Section 6, Lot 36, on February 12, 1896. He was married to Frances Elizabeth L'Hommedieu.

From the Clarion-Ledger, Jackson, Miss., February 12, 1896, p. 4:

Mr. Jacob A. Kausler died last evening at 9:10 o’clock at his house on North President street, and at the time of his death was surrounded by his entire family, which had gathered to watch patiently for the end which it was known some days since must soon come.

Mr. Kausler was born in 1819 in Hagerstown, Maryland, and was thus seventy-six years of age. He moved to Jackson in 1841, and had lived here continuously fifty-five years. On June 10, 1852 Mr. Kausler, then 23 years of age, was united in marriage to Miss. F. E. L’Hommedieu, of this city, and she still survives him. The fruit of this union was nine children of whom two sons and four daughters survive.

He was a devoted husband and father, a kind neighbor and generous friend, and his familiar figure will be sadly missed on the streets of the city as well as around the family hearthstone. For more than half a century Mr. Kausler has been a part of this business community and recognized by all who knew him as a gentleman of the old school, a high-toned, honorable gentleman.

The funeral occurred this afternoon at three o’clock from the church of St. Andrew, the remains being followed there and to the grave by a large number of friends.
