I believe Louisa to be the daughter of German immigrants Johann/John Georg Kaufmann and Catharine Adler, who married on 29 Jan 1826 in Bahlingen, Baden, Germany. I found eight siblings for her, but there may have been others. They were John (b.1827 Germ), Caroline (b.1832 OH), Catharine Jr. (b.1835 OH), George (b.1837 OH), Jacob (1839 OH), Margaret (b.1844 OH), Emily (b.1847 OH), and Amelia (b.1850). Looking at their birth years, the family appears to have immigrated to the U.S. between 1827 and 1832, settling first in Stark County, Ohio.

Between 1847 and 1850 the family moved to Plymouth (mistakenly noted as "My Division"), Marshall County, Indiana. John Sr., aged 50, was farming for a living. Catharine Sr., aged 43, was home with their eight children--John Jr., aged 23, Caroline, aged 18, Catharine Jr., aged 15, George and Jacob, aged 13, Louisa, aged 9, Margaret, aged 6, and Emily, aged 3. Also there was Caroline's husband John Grether, aged 26, whom she had married on 24 Jul 1849 in Stark County, Ohio, and their daughter Catharine III, aged 6 months.

By the 1860 enumeration, the family had moved to German Township, Marshall County. John Sr., aged 59, was busy working the family's farm. Catharine Sr., aged 54, was keeping house. Still at home with their parents were George, aged 23, Jacob, aged 21, Louisa, aged 18, Margaret, aged 16, and Amelia, aged 10. Not there were son John Jr., who had married and was living nearby, daughter Catharine Jr., married daughter Caroline Grether, and daughter Emily, who would have only been about 13 years old.

Before the next census in 1870, Louisa married German-born Henry Botset, a U.S. Civil War Soldier. He served with Co. C of the 20th Indiana Infantry Regiment. It is a miracle he survived the war. He mustered in on 22 Jul 1861 in Indianapolis and out on 29 Jul 1864 with a Corporal's rank.

After Henry returned from the war, he and Louisa married, likely in Iowa where their first two children were born. Son John Henry was born on 27 Sep 1866, followed by Frederick in 1868. I tried to find them on the 1870 Census with no luck.

On 15 Apr, 1872, Louisa's mother Catharine died at age 63.

Sometime before 1879, the family moved to Plymouth, Marshall County, Indiana, where they welcomed Bertha May to the family in 1879. That same year, on 26 Dec 1879, Henry filed for an invalid's pension. I found the family in Plymouth in 1880. Henry, aged 47, was earning a living as a cooper. Louisa, aged 37, was bringing in a little doing laundry while caring for children Fred, aged 11 and Bertha May, aged 8 months. For some reason, 13-year-old son John Henry wasn't with the family that year. I found him on a separate record, living with and doing farm labor for Jacob, aged 42, and Catharine Kauffman in German Township, Marshall County, Indiana. Jacob was likely Louisa's brother as the Kaufman/Kauffman surname is likely one in the same.

On 2 Jun 1881, Louisa's father John died at age 80.

Seven years after that, Louisa's husband Henry died on 29 Oct 1888 at age 57. Louisa filed for her widow's pension on 27 Nov of that year. Henry would miss seeing his three children marry and start their families.

On 15 Mar 1891, John Henry married Margaret Burgoff. Fred married the following year on 16 Feb 1892, exchanging vows with Mary Lena Gorham. Bertha May would marry Valentine J. Pfender on 3 Sep 1903. All three couples married in Marshall County.

I couldn't find Louisa in 1900 or 1910. She died on 26 Apr 1916 in Mishawaka. Both her son Frederick and her daughter Bertha May were living in that city about that time, but Louisa did not appear to have been living with either of them.
