Bertha N. "Bud" Katz, 102, a longtime leader in the Jewish community of Spring-field, passed away Tuesday Sept. 27th in Plantation, FL. She was a former resident of Springfield, moving to Florida in the late 1970's. Born in Bridgeport, CT on April 2, 1909, she was the daughter of the late Abraham and Hannah Newman. She was raised and spent the majority of her adult life living in Springfield, where she graduated from the High School of Commerce. Bertha was very involved in the Jewish community in Springfield. She was a member of Temple Beth El, where she was a past president of its Sisterhood, a past president of the Women's Division at Jewish Geriatric Services, and was a volunteer in the gift shop at the former Springfield Hospital and at the Jewish Nursing Home. Bertha was instrumental in working alongside the building committee for the first Temple Beth El in the 1950's and on the building committee for the Jewish Nursing Home on Converse St. She was an avid golfer, playing into her 90's. Bertha was a charter member of the Oxford C.C. and Crestview C.C., where she was a former Board of Director. She loved her Boston sports, especially her Boston Celtics and Boston Red Sox. Bud was a voracious reader, was very talented at needlepoint and knitting, and a great music lover, enjoying Tanglewood for many summers. She was totally dedicated and very giving to both her family and community. She will always be remembered for her unselfishness. God granted her with a long, successful, and wonderful life. Bertha was predeceased by her beloved husband of 54 years Samuel Katz, her brother Morris Newman, and her two sisters Bella Rothblatt and Anne Lemkin. She was the treasured sister-in-law to Abraham, Max, and Harry Katz, whom with her husband Samuel owned and operated State Line Potato Chip Co. for almost 50 years. She is survived by her son Lewis Katz, her grandson Aaron Katz, her ex-daughter-in-law Margie Katz, and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Bertha's graveside service will be Sunday Oct. 2nd at 11:00 AM at Beth El Cemetery in West Springfield, MA.
