Birth: Mar. 3, 1905
Death: Apr. 8, 2001

Beatrice Katz Alperin touched thousands in need through her lifetime of volunteer work. As a volunteer during World War II, she helped care for wounded soldiers. For 50 years, she helped thousands of immigrants to earn citizenship. Mrs. Alperin also worked as a volunteer with disabled children and with the elderly until she was 90 years old herself. Mrs. Alperin, director of David's Home Fashions, died of heart failure Sunday at the Memphis Jewish Home. She was 96.
"She was a devoted civic person," said her son, David Alperin of Boca Raton, Fla. "She was a perfectionist...meticulous, kind and caring." Mrs. Alperin was recognized by The Commercial Appeal in its "A Thousand Points of Light" series as someone who made life better in the Mid-South by her volunteer work. Her efforts in distributing information on American history and government to non-citizens preparing for their United States citizenship tests was noted. For her service, Mrs. Alperin was also honored by the Daughters of the American Revolution with a Distinguished Woman's Award. She volunteered her time at the B'nai B'rith Home and later at the Memphis Jewish Home helping residents deal with growing old. She also was principal stockholder in David's Home Fashions in Poplar Plaza and worked for years with her son. Mrs. Alperin was a member of the Baron Hirsch Congregation and Hadassah. Services will be 11 a.m. today at Sam Abraham Chapel with burial in Baron Hirsch Cemetery. Mrs. Alperin, the widow of Mose Alperin , also leaves a brother, Sol Katz of West Palm Beach, Fla.; two granddaughters who cared for her, Elizabeth Shahun of Memphis and Carolyn Bender of Scarsdale, N.Y., and two great-grandchildren. The family requests that memorials be sent to a charity of the donor's choice. Canale Funeral Directors has charge. (Published in The Commercial Appeal 4/10/2001)
