Betty Berg, a woman of valor, 86, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family Oct. 13, 2007. Betty was born on Aug. 27, 1921, in Gary, Ind. She was predeceased by her parents, Jeanette and Isadore Katz, and her beloved husband of 57 years, Sidney Berg (of blessed memory). For the last five years she resided at Chesapeake Place Assisted Living where she was loved by residents and staff. Betty was affectionately known as Bubba by both friends and family, and will be remembered for her caring smile and calming nature. Bubba is survived by her two daughters, Judith Freedman and her husband Martin and Ilene Snyder and husband Mark, both of Virginia Beach. She is also survived by her sister, Fannie Kaplan of Chicago; brother, David Katz and his wife Mardi of Schererville, Ind.; and her four grandchildren, Aaron Freedman and wife Claudia of Miami, Fla., Michelle Fryman and husband Robert of Virginia Beach, Jason Freedman and wife Pamela of Valpariaso, Ind., and Rachael Williams of Virginia Beach. Bubba had a special place in her heart for her six great- grandchildren, Michael, Sean, and Sydney Fryman, Ari and Abigail Williams and Benjamin Freedman. In the words of her great-grandchildren, Bubba was caring, loving, pretty, playful, helpful, nice, and best of all, always giving us candy. Betty was an elegant woman with an amazing inner strength and a gentle soul. She will always be remembered as the backbone of the family. Her love of life was expressed through her music, drawings and love of nature. She was instrumental, with her husband, in the formation of the Tidewater Winds Concert Band. Betty was also a volunteer for Bayside Hospital, a member of Beth El Synagogue and its Sisterhood, Hadassah and Hebrew Ladies Charity. A graveside service will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens in Norfolk by Rabbi Rosalin Mandelberg, Rabbi Lawrence Forman and Cantor Jennifer Bern-Vogel. Memorial donations may be made to the The Tidewater Winds, P.O. Box 12027, Norfolk, VA 23541, or to the charity of one's choice. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Norfolk Chapel, is handling arrangements.
