DONNA S. KAROL, 46
Bartender; worked in billing department
Donna S. (Cook) Karol, 46, of Newark, Del., and formerly of Bridgeton, died peacefully in the presence of close family and friends on Sunday evening, Oct. 11, 2009, at St. Francis Hospital in Wilmington, Del.
Donna was born in Bridgeton on May 31, 1963, daughter of Angelo J. "Cookie" Cook of Stow Creek Township and the late Doris L. (Murray) Cook, who lost her battle with cancer in 1998. Donna was the loving wife of Stephen T. Karol, and they had been Bridgeton residents until 1996, when they relocated to Delaware.
A graduate of Cumberland Regional High School in 1981, Donna attended Stow Creek Township School. While living in Bridgeton, Donna is most remembered for her fun and charismatic personality while working as a bartender at the Cohanzick Country Club, the Bridgewater Pub, and also at the Town Tavern. She was employed in the billing department of the Mid-Atlantic Spine Institute in Newport, Del., until she became unable to work in 2000 due to her disease.
Donna was the recipient of a living donor liver transplant in 2001 and was an advocate for nationwide transplant programs. The liver donor, Steve McCann, who resides in Greenville, Del., with his wife and young son, have been active members of the well-known Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring program. Donna often called Steve her guardian angel for selflessly enabling her to have eight more years of a wonderful life. Donna was proud to have been a cancer survivor among countless other conditions, and loved her two Sheltie dogs more than anything.
In addition to her father and husband, Donna is survived by her three sons, Seaman Richie Donlon, USCG, Michael Donlon and Shaun Donlon, all longtime residents of the New Jersey-Delaware area, who now live in Clayton, N.Y. Also surviving are her two sisters, Judith Ann Dolson of Bridgeton and Sandra Ansara of Maine; one brother, William L. Cook of Rochester, N.Y.; and one niece, seven nephews and many cousins. She was predeceased by a brother, Robert L. Cook Sr., who died this past December of ALS.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral service at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Freitag Funeral Home, 137 W. Commerce St., Bridgeton.
The interment will take place at Fernwood Memorial Park in Hopewell Township.
Friends will be received from 9 until 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions are suggested in lieu of flowers to the Delaware Liver Fund, care of the National Foundation for Transplants, 1102 Brookfield, Suite 200, Memphis, TN 38119.
Written condolences and tributes may be expressed to the family using the funeral home's Web site, www.freitagfuneralhome.com.
