GIRARD — Joseph T. Kaputa Jr., 77 of Girard, died Thursday, May 3, 2012, at his home surrounded by his family, following an extended illness.
He was born Feb. 8, 1935, in Guys Mills, to the late Joseph T. Kaputa Sr., and Bertha V. Hodge Kaputa.
After attending Randolph High School in Guys Mills, he worked at Hinkle-McCoy building power lines and also worked at the family business, Kaputa Service Station. Joe worked for Penelec before going to work for the Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad (now Canadian National Railway), retiring in 1990 following 35 years of service as a conductor and train man. Following his retirement Joe worked with the family business, Hunters Inn, located in Frenchtown, as a bartender.
He was a member of Albion Moose Lodge 381, Albion Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Meadville Aerie 429; and was an avid NASCAR and baseball fan, especially the Pittsburgh Pirates and Cleveland Indians. He also enjoyed going to casinos and horse racing.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sister, Virginia Acker; a great-grandson, Joseph T. Kaputa V; a brother-in-law, Clair Anthony; and two nieces, Brenda Acker and Debbie Shattuck.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of nearly 40 years, Neva E. Baldwin Kaputa; daughters, Sherry Kaputa Jarvi and her husband, Eric, Diane Watters and her husband, Bryan; his son, Joseph T. Kaputa III and his wife, Diane, all of Girard; stepdaughters, Kathy Simlick and her husband, Bill, of Albion, and Joy Smith of Erie; stepsons, Daniel Smith of Butler, and Michael Smith and his wife, Michelle, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; sisters, Dorothy Anthony of Guys Mills, Helen Shay and her husband, Daniel, of Meadville, and Darlene Jablon and her husband, Dan, of Greenville; brother, James R. Kaputa of New Richmond; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Friends may call on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Daniel R. Edder Funeral Home, 309 Main St. East, Girard. A Prayer Service will be held there on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 101 Olin Ave., Girard.
Burial will be in Girard Cemetery.
