IONA PAULINE (JOURDAN) BARNES, 80, of Memphis, died June 9, 2008 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Collierville, after an illness of seven months. She died from pneumonia, cardio-pulmonary failure, and other conditions.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Claudus Owen and Mettie Eliza Jourdan. She was the last of the fourth generation of the Jourdan family who moved to what is now northeast Mississippi from the Carolinas in the 1830s. Seven brothers and four sisters preceded her in death: Charles H., Ola Blanche, Hattie, Carmon F., Harmon O., Talbert M., Nora W., Alton, Hollis A., Ottis D., Mauvaline, and one son, Joshua Monroe, age one day.
She leaves two sons: Raymond Woodrow Barnes Jr. and Lummie Claude Barnes; three grandchildren: Carolyn Jean and Walter Hudson, Patricia Elaine and James Thomas, Claude Michael and Mindy Barnes; nine great grandchildren: Victoria Ann Barnes age 17; Christopher Franklin and Jesse Alan Hudson, ages 15 and 13; Matthew Glen, Amanda Marie, Madison Elizabeth Thomas, ages 12, 9, and 5; Hayley Rose, Austin Michael, and Dillon Gracin Barnes, ages seven, four, and four months, and their maternal grandmother, Judith Moody; also nine nephews: Hassell and Marshal Holder, Odell and Ronnie Jourdan, Bobby Jourdan, Billy and Bobby Elliott, Hollis Jourdan Jr. and Harold Jourdan; five nieces: Kathy Jourdan, Wilma Jean Jourdan Glover, Quay (Jourdan) Hartranft, Judith (Jourdan) Rhodes, Barbara (Jourdan) Russell.
Born in the Cairo Community of Prentiss County, Mississippi, she came to the Memphis area in 1944 at age 16 and got a job at the Cordova Munitions Factory. She was the sole survivor of an explosion at the building in which she worked. She was self employed most of her life. For the last 30 years of life, she worked for, managed, and then co-owned the old Fisherville Lake Store until her retirement, when the store was closed.
A memorial was held for her at Herb Parsons State Park on June 21. She donated her remains to the Genesis Donor Program at the M.E. & R. Institute.
We ask that any memorial be sent to a charity of your choice and that you consider doing likewise, since that was the only memorial she wanted.
