Sara J. "Sally" Bers, 93, a lifelong York resident, died Monday evening, July 7, 2008, while visiting her summer home in Bethany Beach, Del. She was the wife of the late Dr. Sol N. Bers, a retired pediatrician and graduate of Jefferson Medical College of Philadelphia.
Born March 3, 1915, in York, she was a daughter of the late Jennie (Bentzel) Jordan and George Jordan, who retired as president of Drovers and Mechanics Bank. She was a member of the William Penn class of 19M32, was one of the first women to graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Duke University in 1936, and received a Master's Degree in Chemistry from Penn State University. She had worked as a lab supervisor at York Hospital and Harrisburg Hospital, and also worked as a research chemist for Armstrong Cork Company in Lancaster, where she held a patent. Sally was a member of the Out Door Country Club, where she enjoyed playing bridge and golf. She was an avid traveler, and fondly remembered adventurous trips to Alaska, the Panama Canal, and Costa Rica, among others. She also loved vacationing in Bethany Beach, where she built a summer home to share with her children and grandchildren in 1990. Sally will be remembered by her friends and family for her feisty and festive spirit and her love for life, loved ones, and fine champagne.
Mrs. Bers is survived by a son, George E. Bers and his wife, Jane (Frantz) Bers of Pleasant Hill, Calif.; a daughter, Ellen B. Johnson and her husband, Michael of York; five grandchildren, Nicholas E. Bers and Emilie J. Bers, both of Pleasant Hill, Dr. Jennie L. Byrne of Chapel Hill, N.C., and Sarah E. Johnson and Kate R. Johnson, both of Boston, Mass.; one great-grandson, Duncan R. Byrne of Chapel Hill; one nephew, Michael George of Sonoma, Calif.; a niece, Linda S. Morris of Carl Junction, Mo.; and a brother-inlaw, Albert C. George of York. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen M. Scott and M. Isabel George.
Entombment will take place in Mount Rose Cemetery.
