Alvenia Tate Jordan , a pianist for several community churches and a private piano teacher, died Tuesday at a local nursing home. She was 79.

Mrs. Jordan , who resided in Prichard, was a native of Clarke County. She was a member of Pilgrim Rest A.M.E. Zion Church in Whistler where she sang in the Senior Choir, was a member of Adult Home Mission and served on Stewardess Board No. 2. She was also a deaconess.

Survivors include two sons, Calvin Jordan Jr. of Mobile and Herbert C. Jordan of Prichard; 11 sisters, Mattie Tarvin of Prichard, Hattie M. Moffat, Ann James, Katie Weaver, Fannie M. Rogers, Mable Dozier, all ofMobile, Eula Kato of Detroit, Mich., Rosetta Pickens of San Antonio, Texas, Rose Marie Cummings of Akron, Ohio, Selena Adams of New Orleans, La., and Viola Gordon of Marrero, La.; two brothers, John L. Tate of Akron, Ohio, and Benjamin Tate of Tampa, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Visitation at Pilgrim Rest A.M.E. Zion Church in Whistler is scheduled Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., when the funeral is set to begin. Interment will be at Whispering Pines Cemetery.
