On Friday, Nov. 24, 2006, called to his eternal home, Mrs. Virginia Blair Jordan.
She was born Sept. 25, 1919, to the late Mrs. Ollie Mack Blair. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Sarah B. Read and Helen B. Camm; and one brother, Thomas E. Blair.
At an early age she joined the Holiness Church in Lynchburg and later joined the Stuyvesant Heights Christian Church in Brooklyn, N.Y. where she was an active member for 25 years serving dutifully as an usher. Upon returning to Lynchburg in 1984, she joined Court Street Baptist Church and served as vice-president and later president of the pastor's aid ministry. She was also an active member of the senior adult ministry.
Virginia was educated in the Lynchburg Public Schools and graduated from Dunbar High School in 1937. She later earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Brooklyn College, Brooklyn, N.Y. She loved learning and pursued knowledge as an avid reader, often sharing her thoughts on issues with family and friends.
Virginia spent most of her working career, 26 years, in New York City as an employee/supervisor for the New York City Human Resources Division. Upon retiring to Lynchburg, she became a substitute teacher in the Lynchburg City Schools fulfilling a lifelong dream.
Virginia loved people and became a member of the Queen of Sheba Chapter No. 45 of the Order of the Eastern Star in Manhatten, N.Y. She was granted Past Worthy Matron and Queen of South certificates. Virginia was also a proud member of the Ladies of Leisure Club of Lynchburg.
Virginia cherished her family and was a special aunt to her nieces, Helen C. Harris (George), of Roanoke, Alberta C. Boyd (Frank) of Hampton; nephews, Leslie M. Camm Sr. (Vivian) of Lynchburg and Rodney M. Camm (Rochelle) of Virigina Beach; two stepbrothers, Harold Blair and Robert Blair; three great-nephews, George W. Harris III, Leslie M. Camm Jr. and Larry M. Camm; three great-nieces, Paula Dell, Meisha Camm and Melanie Camm; two great-great-nieces, Jordan Harris and Shamaya Camm; four great-great- nephews, Ronald Corbin, Justin Harris, John C. Organ and Vincent T. Organ; a special cousin, Ophelia Davis; and a host of other relatives and friends.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2006, at Court Street Baptist Church with the Rev. Rodney R. Forrest officiating. Interment will be in Forest Hill Burial Park. The family is receiving friends one hour prior to the service at the church and other times at the home of her nephew, Leslie Camm Sr., 603 Smyth Street.
