Barbara M. Jones Gresham, a resident of Las Vegas since 1947, passed away peacefully at home Jan. 8, 2013, her son, Robert, with whom she had lived since 1989, was by her side. Barbara was born March 28, 1913, in Houston, to Alva Waightman and Christena MacKay Jones. The family moved in 1916 to Portland, Ore., where she grew up and became an exceptional child pianist and Queen of Jobs Daughters. Barbara received a full scholarship to Reed College, Portland, Ore., in the pre-med program. She left college during the Great Depression for financial reasons and became a manager at Portland General Electric (PGE). She attended night school and nearly completed her degree. In Portland, she was active in golf and water sports, was an accomplished English-style horsewoman and reigned as queen of the PGE float in a Portland Rose City Parade. Barbara married Robert "Bob" Lambert Gresham in Portland, May 18, 1940. They moved to Las Vegas in 1947. With her husband in a steel back brace after spinal surgery and under doctor's orders to seek a warmer, dryer climate, Barbara was responsible for packing up the family and all the belongings, selling the house and moving them all to Las Vegas. Barbara managed all the bookkeeping for R. L. Gresham Insurance Adjusters, a business she and her husband, Robert, began in Las Vegas in 1947. The company expanded into other western states and Robert L. Gresham Jr. assumed management from 1968 to its closing in 2005. Barbara was a member of the City Planning Commission, was active in the Republican Party and was instrumental in starting the recreation center which became so popular with teenagers. She helped establish the First Presbyterian Church of Las Vegas, where she served as a deacon. In later years, she joined the Lutheran church and attended Lakes Lutheran Church. In 1959, Barbara directed the work for a new family home at 3081 Alta Drive. In 1970, she moved into a smaller home, where she cared for both her mother and her husband, Robert, while continuing to oversee accounting for R. L. Gresham Insurance Adjusters. At the age of 57, she began to study computers and traveled to California for IBM classes, then supervised the automation of accounting for the business. She had offices both at home and in the company's building and retired in 1988 at the age of 75. From the beginning of family life, Barbara was the financial manager for both home and business. Her numerous intelligent investments made possible the family's purchase of new homes, college educations for the three children and extensive care for both Crit and Bob. Barbara traveled extensively beyond the western U.S., visiting New England, Hawaii, Europe, and China. For her 80th birthday, she traveled to Salzburg and Vienna. Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. Gresham in 1980. She is survived by her three children, Janet Chisholm of Albany, Calif., Robert L. Gresham Jr. of Las Vegas, and Christena Springer (Oswald Adimariski) of North Las Vegas; two grandchildren, Barbara Chisholm (Elena Zykova) of Berkeley, Calif., and Christena Gibbs (Sam Cunningham) Of Oakland, Calif.; and four great-grandchildren. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, at Palm Mortuary, 1325 N. Main St. Entombment to follow. Donations may be made in memory of Barbara M. Gresham to the Lakes Lutheran Church, 8200 W.
