Donald served as a Flight Officer & Navigator on B-24M #44-42364, 370th Bomber Squadron, 307th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Perry County, Illinois prior to the war.

B-24M #44-42364 took off, with a crew of 9, on a bombing mission over Balikpapan, Indonesia. During the bombing run over the target they were hit by anti-aircraft fire that either disabled or damaged all four engines.

They crew was given the order to bailout over the open ocean and the entire crew did. 7 members of the crew were later rescued and 2 were lost in the sea.

Donald was declared "Missing In Action" on this mission during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster and the Purple Heart.

Donald also has a "Cenotaph" in the Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery, Du Quoin, Illinois.
