Perry Lee (Jones) Cumming, 90, the first-ever resident of the Royal Meadows Assisted Living in Austinburg, OH, where she had lived since March, 2003, died at the University Hospitals Memorial Hospital of Geneva November 19, 2006, from complications of an acute illness. Born Perry Lee Jones, daughter of Catherine Wylie (Roddey) and Harry Tudor Jones, of Norfolk, VA on April 16, 1916, she married John Thomson Cumming there on November 7, 1943. They lived in Willowick form 1948 until John's death in 1975, at which time she continued to live in Willowick before moving to Royal Meadows. Mrs. Cumming earned a degree in Botany from Duke University in Durham, NC. Among various employments, she taught science at Peace Junior College in Raleigh, NC and worked as a chemist for the Navy Lab in Norfolk, VA during the Second World War. Her life-long interest in gardening expressed itself through years as a judge of flower-arranging and volunteer work as a member of Master Gardeners of Lake County, Which organization named her its' first Master Gardener Emeritus in 2003. She loved reading and contract bridge. Though she attended services at the First United Church of Christ in Austinburg since moving to Ashtabula County in 2003, she remained a member of the First United Church of Christ, Eastlake. Throughout her life, she enjoyed visiting Montreat (Conference Center for the Presbyterian Church) near Ashville, NC where her family maintains summer cottages. She owned a home there herself for several years. Perry Lee, eldest of five children, is survived by her brothers, Harry Jones, Jr. of Thomasville, GA, Roddey Jones of Ashland, VA and Randolph Jones of Allentown, PA; and sister, Catherine Frith of Charlottesville, VA. She is also survived by daughters, Elizabeth (Robert) Edwards of Roaming Shores, OH and Mary Pearson of Middleton, MI; a son, John R. Cumming of Los Angles, CA; six grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 28, 2006, in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel by the Rev. Phyllis R. Earley of Epworth United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.hollomon-brown.com.
