Mary Letitia Babcock, a Seaside resident of 30 years, died Thursday, Sept. 10, 2009, at West Hills Health and Rehabilitation Center in Portland from complications arising from a stroke. May was born May 1, 1915, in the Cockhill district of Tarbert, in County Kerry, Ireland.
After the death of her father, William Hamilton Jones, she immigrated to Portland in 1929 with her mother, Mary Ellen Jones, and her brothers and sisters. The Jones family spent their first two years in Portland with her uncle Dr. John Talbot and his family.
May lived in Los Angeles for one school year, attending Hollywood High School and graduated from Grant High School in Portland. She worked as a hairdresser.
In 1943 she married BLAIR ADDISON BABCOCK. The couple settled in the Cedar Mill area where they raised their family. May was a member of North Coast Family Fellowship in Seaside.
She is survived by her sons, Steve, Jack and Chris; daughter-in-law, Susie; grandchildren, Stephen and Mary; and nephews and cousins.
May was preceded in death by her husband; sisters, Agnes Jordan and Elizabeth Jones; and brothers, John W. Jones and Adam H. Jones.
A celebration of life will be held from 12 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2009, at Charbonneau Golf Club, 32020 S.W. Charbonneau Dr., Wilsonville. Private burial in Willamette National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Folk Time, 4837 N.E. Couch St., Portland, OR 97213.
