Doris Tabb Bain
Norfolk - Doris Tabb Bain, beloved mother, cherished grandmother, and adored wife, died February 13, 2012 at Sentara Leigh Hospital surrounded by her loving family and friends. Born in Norfolk, she was the only child of Walter and Mary Jones of Norfolk. Doris graduated from Granby High School and enrolled at the University of South Carolina. At South Carolina, she was an active member of Alpha Delta Pi. Upon completion of college, Doris moved back to Norfolk, where she played an active role in the Norfolk community. At a young age, Doris became a world traveler, which turned into a lifelong hobby. She especially enjoyed traveling to Spain. Doris encouraged all of her grandchildren to see the world. She grew to love cruises, on which she was always in the company of good friends. Doris was an advocate of the arts, especially that which involved music. She had a deep appreciation for education and scholarship and was a respected devotee of the College of William and Mary. She frequently challenged herself with French courses offered at Old Dominion University. She was an avid reader and a regular customer at the Larchmont Branch Norfolk Public Library. Doris was an exceptional entertainer and hostess, spending her summers in Sandbridge at her beach cottage, where she enjoyed playing Bridge and Kings in the Corner with friends and family. Doris devoted her life to her family, providing unwavering love, generosity, and support.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Judge Linwood Baldwin Tabb, Jr. of Norfolk and her second husband, Judge Robert Winston Bain of Portsmouth. Doris is survived by her children, Doris Tabb Warman and husband Daniel, Linwood Baldwin Tabb, III and wife Marcia, Judith Lee Tabb Lauterbach and husband Fred, and much-loved son-in-law, Troy Joseph Hitson. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Phoebe Tabb Hitson, Philip Daniel Warman, Lauren Ashley Tabb, Lindsey Erin Tabb, Judith Anne Knudsen, and Lawrence Richard Buchholz and great grandchildren, Claudia Lee Buchholz and Emma Rose Buchholz.
The family wishes to acknowledge the support of Dr. Steven Ackerman and his team, which includes Chaplain David Martin and Nurse Karen Davis in addition to the wonderful care provided by Faith Banks and her staff.
