Lorene Frances Butler
May 8, 1915 - July 31, 2010

A funeral service will be held for Lorene Frances Butler, 95, of Reedsport at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 6, at the Church of God, 2191 Birch Ave. in Reedsport.

Lorene was born premature May 8, 1915, on her grandparent’s farm in Merlin, to James Clinton Havens and Jessie Rebecca Rice. She died July 31, 2010.

The first few years of her life she lived in Coos Bay as her father worked in the ship yards during World War I. The family then moved to Grants Pass, where her father owned and operated the Quick Lunch Café.

Her mother died when she was 10 years old and she was then raised by her father, grandparents and aunt, Jeanette Warder. She and her aunt moved to Reedsport in 1933 so her aunt could open a beauty shop. Soon after her arrival in Reedsport, she met Jim Butler. They were married Dec. 23, 1936, at the Methodist Church in Coos Bay.

Jim worked for E. C. Hall Construction and they moved throughout Oregon and Washington on road construction for eight years, returning and settling in Reedsport in 1945. In Reedsport they raised their three children, Janet, Cheryl and Jim.

Lorene “Rene” was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was affectionately called Gam by most who knew her. She was also known for always having a full cookie jar. She loved to cook, garden and enjoyed birds and flowers. She also enjoyed watching the boats come in over the bar and the waves roll up on the beach. Her greatest joy was being a grandmother and then a great-grandmother.

Lorene was involved with the local fisherman’s Wives Association, Grandma’s Club and the First Baptist Church. For many years she was the local chairperson for the Cancer Fund and American Heart Fund.

Lorene is survived by her children, Janet Gray of Laramie, Wyo., Cheryl and Carl Hedges of Reedsport and Jim Butler of Reedsport; grandchildren, Michael and Christine Gray, Melissa and Joel Fonte’ Gray of Laramie, Jeff Hedges of Eugene, Jennifer and Loren Wright of Reedsport and Stephanie and Marcelo Oliveira of Santa Clara, Calif.; great-grandchildren, Ashlee Gray, Mitchell Gray, Cooper Gray, Rebecca “Bella” Fonte’ of Laramie and Lindsey and Emily Wright of Reedsport; stepgreat-grandson, Brett Wright of Coquille and stepgreat-great-granddaughter, Kendal Wright.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Butler; her parents; her brother, Clinton LaVern Havens; half-sisters, Marie Heyenberg and Irene Richardson; stepbrother, Jack Miller; son-in-law, Fred Gray; and infant great-grandson, William James Gray.

The family suggests memorial contributions to Reedsport Education Enrichment Foundation (REEF), P.O. Box 203, Reedsport, OR 97467; or Old Towne Reedsport Merchants Association, P.O. 543, Reedsport, OR 97467 for the beautification of Old Town.

Arrangements are under the direction of Dunes Memorial Chapel, (541) 271-2822.
