SPRINGFIELD - Ethel Boyle Blanco, 95, of Springfield died Feb. 26, 2009, at Lewis Memorial Christian Village.
She was born March 26, 1913, in Bedford, IN, shortly after her parents, James and Jessie Davis Jones, and two brothers moved from England. She lost her parents due to WWI flu and was raised by a neighbor who moved to Louisville, KY. She attended the University of Louisville for 2½ years and then she transferred to the University of Iowa, where she graduated in Home Economics. She then completed a Dietetic Internship at Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis and remained on the hospital staff from 1936-1940 at which time she began working for the IL Department of Public Welfare (now Dept. of Mental Health) as Food Administrator until 1968, when she became Assistant Purchasing Agent, and held this position until she retired in 1972.
She married Royce Boyle in 1942 and he preceded her in death in 1972. She married Thomas B. Blanco in 1982 and he preceded her in death in 1988.
As a charter member of the Altrusa Club of Springfield since 1948, and has been active in local, district and international level, and served as President of Altrusa International, Inc., 1971-1973, Altrusa is a classified Service club for women in business. As president-elect Mrs. Blanco represented Altrusa as a member of the White House Conference on the aging, and earlier serviced as a technical consultant of the Illinois Commission to the White House Conference on Children and Youth.
As a volunteer, she wrote menus for the Little Red School House and taught Senior Citizens how to pass the Drivers License Test at the American Red Cross. She is a member of the American Dietetic; the Illinois Dietetic Association; Delta Zeta sorority; past Matron, Flower City Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star; and Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Mrs. Blanco is survived by three stepsons, Tim (wife, Mary Lynne) Blanco of Rochester, Jim (wife, Dianne) Blanco of Chicago and Tom Blanco of Bloomington; two stepgranddaughters, Michelle and Laurie; and several nieces and a nephew in Milwaukee.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the funeral service at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 2, 2009, at Boardman-Smith Funeral Chapel. Burial to follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
