John Claude Joliat died peacefully on Friday, Nov. 2, 2012, at Green Meadows Care Center. He had been suffering from complications with Alzheimer's disease and had lived at his Louisville home until recently.
John was born March 28, 1931, to Alfred J. Joliat and Cecelia B. Sumser in Canton, Ohio. He was a graduate of St. Peter's Catholic School and a 1949 graduate of Central Catholic High School. During both grade school and high school, John was a standout athlete in football, basketball and baseball, and was a top student in the classroom. He had many lifelong friends from his days at St. Peter's and Central.
John had attended Kent State University for 1 ½ years before he started working at Republic Steel in Canton. There he finished the machinist apprentice program in 1957. He retired from Republic Steel as a machinist in 1995.
John was active in the Louisville community throughout the years. He coached football with the Louisville Little Leopards and baseball with the Little League. John was a faith-filled member of St. Louis Parish for more than 56 years, serving on Parish Council. He also volunteered for St. Thomas Aquinas High School fundraisers and Meals on Wheels and was a driver for priests at Emmaus House. He was always willing to lend a hand. John was a devoted fan of the Cleveland Indians and Cleveland Browns. He was a longtime member of the Louisville YMCA as a swimmer and member of the arthritic swim classes.
John was a humble and compassionate friend. Even in his recent years, he didn't lose his friendliness, calling himself and others "Jose Greco" just to make a connection with forgotten friends.
John married his high school sweetheart, the former Jacqueline Cecelia McCallin, on May 2, 1953. They were married for 40 years until her death in 1993. They had seven children, including Patricia Joliat of Louisville, Michele (Joseph) Pederzolli of Hanoverton, Karen Pouliot of Canton, MaryAnn (Joseph) Romayo of Louisville, Timothy (Laura) Joliat of Dayton, Kathleen (Scott) Lucius of Powell and Christopher (Kristin) Joliat of Mars, Pa.; and nine grandchildren, Lena (Thomas) Cahir of Wakefield, R.I., John Pederzolli of Salem, Nicholas Pederzolli of Norwood, Victoria (Andrew) James of Trinity, Fla., Philip Joliat of Dayton, Jared Joliat of Dayton, Carter Joliat of Dayton, and Cecelia and Samuel Joliat of Mars, Pa. A great-grandchild is due in March 2013.
John is also survived by two brothers, Alfred (Sally) Joliat of North Canton and David (Carol) Joliat of Canton; and many nieces and nephews in both the Joliat and McCallin families.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Jacqueline; son-in-law, Vernon Pouliot; and granddaughters, Marie and Renee Pederzolli. He was also preceded by his sister, Miriam Joliat; and brothers, William, James, Edward and Thomas Joliat.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated for John at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, 2012, in St. Louis Catholic Church, with the Rev. Fr. Larry Frient officiating. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.
