James Johnston was Secretary OF State for Scotland. He built the house at Twickenham which was later to be known as Orleans House. All that remains of the original is the famous Octagon gallery. James was a keen gardener, adding "canals, an icehouse, a kitchen garden, a pleasure garden, a wilderness, a grotto and a fruit garden" to the lands. The architect used by James Johnston was John James, later to be employed in the rebuilding of St Mary's after it fell down in 1713. In the 20th Century, Orleans House was bought and demolished, apparently so that gravel could be dug!
