Alene (Johnston) Barber, 89, of Bald Knob, died Friday, February 6, 2009 at the White County Medical Center in Searcy. She was born June 6, 1919 in Bald Knob to the late Douglas and LaVenia Susan Watson Johnston. She was an assistant to area dentist, Dr. George Alcott, for a number of years and a homemaker. She was an excellent mother and grandmother, a well known seamstress and quilt maker and known for her good works in the community. Mrs. Barber was a life-long member of the Velvet Ridge Church of Christ.

She is survived by her sons, Dewayne Barber (Paulette) of Bald Knob and Golden Barber (Paula) of Velvet Ridge; daughters, Helen Mae Barber of Bald Knob, Wilma Lynn McAlister (Henry) of Elizabethtown, KY., Willie Alene Millard (Bill) of Sandpoint, ID. and Joy Nell Grubbs (Bobby) of Early, TX.; 12 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clint Barber; a son, Riley Barber; sister, Lola Jones and a brother, Golden Johnston.

Services will be conducted on Monday, February 9, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at the Velvet Ridge Church of Christ with interment in Velvet Ridge Cemetery. Visitation will be on Sunday from 6:30 – 9:00 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home, Bald Knob. Arrangements entrusted to Powell Funeral Homes. www.powellfuneralhome.net.
