Dr. William B. Johnston was a native of the District of Columbia. Both his father and grandfather were practicing physicians in the District. He graduated from Harvard University in 1897 and received his medical training at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, Maryland. After practicing medicine in the District for a short time he moved to France where he studied paining and won the Reconnaissance Francaise for hospital work during World War I. He moved to Reno, Nevada in 1924. He died at age 72 on November 19, 1948 at his home in Reno, Nevada after a long illness. Survivors included his widow, Janet Newlands Johnston, daughter of Senator Francis G. Newlands of Nevada; one daughter, Mrs. William Sharon Farr of 7007 Curtis Street in Chevy Chase, Maryland and one sister, Mrs. George A. Whitman of 1901 Wyoming Avenue Northwest. Interment was in Reno [incorrect as both he and his wife were interred in Oak Hill Cemetery].
