Alphaeus Otis is the son of James Alphaeus Johnston and Mary German. Lucian Branning, brother-in-law of Otis, wrote in his chronicles: "The Johnstons were Presbyterians... All the Johnston children were baptized, by sprinkling. Granpa was a farmer. [They] moved to Towner N.Dak. in 1902. Grandma was in poor health, and had diabetes. Her doctor suggested a dryer climate."

In 1910, Otis' brother 'Jack' went to Alberta, Canada and homesteaded near Bow Island. In 1911, the rest of the family came to Medicine Hat, Bow Island.
