HARLEYVILLE, SC - Arthur William Johnston of 288 East Main Street, Harleyville died Tuesday, January 11, 2005 in Trident Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday in the Bethel United Methodist Church with Rev. Ed Reynolds officiating, burial will be in Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Bryant Funeral Home in St. George.

He was born December 12, 1919 in Dorchester a son of the late William and Lavina Flickner Johnston and raised by his adopted parents, Hampton and Mamie Parker.

He graduated Harleyville High School in 1938 and in 1941 he graduated from the Textile Industrial Institute now known as Spartanburg Methodist College.

He was in the Navel Reserve in Honolulu, Hawaii rebuilding Pearl Harbor from 1942 until 1944. He was a retired Electrician for Giant Cement Company, a member of Ruritan Club of Harleyville, and Bethel United Methodist Church where he was a former Church Treasurer and member of Administrative Board.

He was a former Magistrate for Harleyville. He was predeceased by brothers; Grover Johnston, J.D. Johnston, Henry Parker and a sister, Edna J. Myers. Surviving his wife, Bessie Pearl Mizell Johnston; sons, Arthur W. (Billy) Johnston, Jr. and his wife Vickie all of Harleyville, Wade Hampton Johnston and his wife Pamela of Indianapolis, IN. Grandchildren; William and Debbie Johnston, III , Harleyville, Jennifer and Stacy Axson and their daughter, Shelby of Bowman, and Andrew Johnston and Jordan Johnston of Indianapolis, IN. Brothers; Carlyle (Ruth) Johnston, North Charleston and George (Odell) Parker, Dorchester, Sister-in-law, Catherine (Sweetie) Parker, Holly Hill. Memorials may be made to Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, in care of U.Z. Baxley, 987 Second Bend Road, Harleyville, SC 29448.
