Matilda Elizabeth Johnson Claiborne, of Petersburg, VA, was of deep faith and joined her family church, Odell Baptist Church of Littleton, NC at an early age. She received her elementary and secondary education in Halifax and Warren Counties, N.C. She received her B.S. degree in Home Economics in 1938, from A&T College, Greensboro, N.C. She completed further studies at North Carolina Central University, Durham, N.C.; Virginia State University, Petersburg; Hampton University, Hampton; and Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y.
"Tillie", as her friends and co-workers knew her, taught for 39 years beginning in Elizabethtown, N.C. and Halifax County, Va., where she worked one year each. The remaining 37 years of her teaching career was in Dinwiddie County. She taught most of those years at the Dinwiddie Training School and Southside High School where she became friends with and inspired many students. She retired from Dinwiddie County High School in 1977. She received an award from the Dinwiddie County School System for her many years of outstanding dedicated service.
In 1947, Matilda became an active and faithful member of the Zion Baptist Church of Petersburg. She was Church School Superintendent from 1978- 1987. She helped organize and was the first Chairman of the Board of Christian Education at Zion from 1985-1994, and member of the Missionary Association and Pulpit Aid Society. She was named 1993 Woman of the Year at Zion, member of the Zion Diamonds, and life member of the Baptist General Convention of Virginia.
Matilda was affiliated with many organizations and active in many facets of her community. She was a life member of the Virginia Retired Teachers Association, Rowanty Vocational Educational Advisory Board, NAACP, and the Virginia Vocational Home Economic Association. She received a certificate of appreciation from Operation Bread Basket for her service from 1976-1994. She was the ultimate traveler and was a founding member of Travel Club Adventure.
She was a member of Delta Sigma Theta National Sorority. She joined the Alpha Mu Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta on the campus of A&T College in 1938, and has been affiliated with the Petersburg Alumnae Chapter since she moved to the area. In 2001, the Petersburg Alumnae Chapter honored her with 60 plus years of outstanding service.
Matilda believed strongly in family and was a woman of vision. She spent the last ten years of her life trying to ensure that her family heritage and legacy were in tact. She established the Johnson-Solomon Family Heritage Committee and Foundation. She felt that it was important that all of her nieces and nephews knew each other and had a knowledge and appreciation of their history. Although, never a maternal mother, she was a mother to many.
A funeral was conducted at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 2, 2003, at Zion Baptist Church, Byrne Street, Petersburg, VA. The Petersburg Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority performed their Omega Omega ceremony at 11 a.m.
