SALEM — Brenda J. Conn, 65, of Iuka, died Jan. 16, 2011, at St. Mary's Hospital in Centralia.

Born Dec. 21, 1945, in Dale, she was the daughter of Ernest E. and Mae (Smith) Johnson, who preceded her in death.

She was a personal aid for many pupils in Salem Elementary School District 111, including Dustin White and Jessica Dickerson. She worked many years as a waitress for Austin's Restaurant.

She was a member of Grace Church of the Nazarene in Salem. She deeply appreciated her church family and the many prayer partners who spent time praying with and for her.

She enjoyed photography and flower gardening.

She loved her family, and her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren.

She married Glendell Carter on June 26, 1964, at Dale; they were later divorced. She then married James "Jim" Conn on March 21, 1987, in Springerton; he survives in Iuka.

Also surviving are Jody Zellers, her daughter, and husband Eric of Dahlgren; Pam Thrash, her daughter, and husband Jason of West Frankfort; Neil Johnson, her brother, of McLeansboro; Carolyn Woodrow, her sister, and husband Larry of McLeansboro; Dana McCann, her sister, of Denver; and grandchildren Cole, Cady and Jack Zellers and Keagan and Karsyn Thrash.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother Earl Johnson on Sept. 16, 2010.

Funeral services were Wednesday at Grace Church of the Nazarene in Salem with Kevin Donoho officiating. Burial was at Smith Cemetery, Dale.

Memorials may be made to Grace Church of the Nazarene and will be accepted by Rankin Funeral Home, which is in charge of arrangements.
