In 1918, the East side of Lake Washington was dotted with small mining, sawmill, fishing, whaling, ship building and farming towns. Wilburton, home of the Train Station and Sawmill along with Bellevue, home of the local whaling fleet and Ferry Landing lost 3 Sons in the Great War and in 1926 the Bellevue Minute Women, after placing three Elm trees in 1920, lead the effort to place a Memorial Monument in front of the Elementary School, with a 65' Flag Pole that could be seen from all of the surrounding orchards and farm fields to honor it's 3 Fallen Sons, Cpl. C. Oscar Johnson, Pvt. Victor Hansen and Pvt. Victor Freed. The elementary school is gone and so is the flag pole, but in time for the celebration of the Centennial of the World War Armistice on November 11th 2018 area citizens stepped up and restored, reinforced and improved this Memorial Monument. 2 of the original Elm trees still surround the memorial and after the third on died in about 1997, the city replaced it with a new adult tree. Robert Shay, Chaplain, Veteran of Foreign Wars, Post 2995.
