He was born May 6, 1922, to Anton and Ellen Johnson in Thompson Falls, Mont. In 1923 they moved to a farm in Trout Creek, Mont., where he and his brother, Anton, grew up. He attended a one-room elementary school and graduated in 1941 from Noxon High School as class Valedictorian.

After graduation he worked for the Northern Pacific Railroad. In April 1944 he entered the United States military, taking his basic training at Camp Roberts in California. He crossed the Atlantic Ocean on the Queen Mary, landing in Scotland. He spent a week in England before being sent to a replacement depot in France, where he joined the 143rd Infantry, 36th Div., Co. F. He served and fought in France and Germany. He was wounded in combat Dec. 7, 1944, and received the Purple Heart along with the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster. He spent 18 months overseas before being discharged in 1946 as a staff sergeant.

After discharge he returned home to Montana to work with the railroad. On Dec. 7, 1948, he married Lora Mae Duffel in Tempe, Ariz. They made their home at Trout Creek. He did various jobs, including working on the family farm, working on the Noxon Dam project, and for the Trout Creek School District.

Their children, Lynn, Ed and Gus, were born during this time. In 1962 they moved to Plains, Mont., where he was self-employed as an electrician and plumber. Gunnar and his wife were also caretakers at the Sanders County Fairgrounds for seven years. In 1976 Gunnar went to work for the Plains School District, retiring in 1987.

In 1992 Gunnar and Lora moved to Lewiston to be close to their grandchildren. Gunnar enjoyed working with his hands and helping others. He was loved and respected by all who knew him.
