Bernard L. (Barney) Johnson, 76, died Wednesday, June 28, 2006, at his Lewiston home surrounded by his loving family.
Barney was born June 9, 1930, in Troy to Lloyd (Steamboat) and Irma Froman Johnson. He attended Troy schools, graduating from high school in 1948. While in high school he worked for the Rauch Lumber Company in Moscow.
After high school Barney enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, in which he served from 1948 to 1952, the majority of time stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska. He received a Good Conduct medal and was honorably discharged as a staff sergeant.
On Feb. 21, 1953, he was married to Carole Joyce Anderson. He attended Kinman Business University in Spokane, from which he graduated in 1955. Then he and Carole moved to Walla Walla, where he worked for Pepsi Cola.
In 1959 they moved to Lewiston, where Barney went to work for the Carnation Dairy. Carole died Dec. 27, 1966, and Barney never remarried.
In 1971 Barney purchased the local Darigold distributorship, which he operated until 1980. He then purchased Curley's No. 1 in North Lewiston, which he operated until 2003.
Barney was baptized in the Troy Lutheran Church. He was a member in the American Legion and the Moose Lodge of Clarkston.
Barney is survived by a son, Gregory Lee Johnson of Lewiston; daughters Anne Denise Bogar of Lewiston and Lisa Lynette Aldridge of Cameron, N.C.; nine grandchildren, Shaun Braden of Coeur d'Alene, Melisa Gibbins, Melanie Braden, and Samantha Coons, all three of Clarkston, Lindsay Aldridge and Jessica Aldridge, both of North Carolina, Marcus Kelly Johnson of Tacoma, Leif Johnson and Zoe Johnson, both of Missoula, Mont. Also by three great-grandchildren: Rakiah Lynn Coons, Bailey Anne Gibbins, Kaylee Renee Coons, all of Clarkston; and by a great-grandson who will be born any day, Dylan Joseph Preusser. Two stepbrothers, Dick Olson and Ralph Olson, both of Troy, and two half-sisters, Janet Anderson and Marge Schaper of Moscow, also survive him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Carole Anderson Johnson, and two sons, Marc Allyn and Steven Lloyd Johnson.
A visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Malcom's Brower-Wann Funeral Home in Lewiston, after which cremation will take place.
There will be a memorial service at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Normal Hill Cemetery in Lewiston.
