Pioneer Lady Passed Away on Monday
Mrs. Charles Johnson Died at Her Home on Howard Street
Lived Here Forty Years
Mother of Mrs. George W. Bale and Mrs. Mathilda Troyer – Funeral Today

Mrs. Chas. Johnson, one of Estherville's pioneer women, passed away at her home on east Howard street Monday [November 3, 1924] afternoon from heart trouble. Mrs. Johnson had lived in this community for nearly forty years and during that time had made herself dear to the hearts of all who knew her. She was born at Nustrup, Schleswig, Denmark, on June 12th, 1845. Her maiden name was Anna Bolsen. When she was twenty-six years of age she left her home and family in Denmark to come to this new country of which so much had been told. She was married to Charles Johnson shortly after her arrival in this country and they located at Keokuk, Iowa, until the spring of 1886, when they came to Estherville to reside. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson were the parents of five children, three sons and two daughters. Mr. Johnson and the three sons have preceded Mrs. Johnson in death. Besides her daughters, one brother, Alvin, who is in Denmark, remains to mourn the loss of his sister. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson came to this community when it was in the process of being built up and they worked tirelessly to make a home for themselves and children. After her husband's death, Mrs. Johnson made her home with her daughters. Ever of a cheerful, happy disposition, she was contented and satisfied with her lot in life and during her illness never complained of her affliction. The living children are Mrs. George W. Bale and Mrs. Mathilda Troyer, both of this city. Funeral services will be held from the Bale home this (Wednesday) afternoon at two o'clock. Rev. Whittle, of the Grace Episcopal church will be in charge of the services. The sympathy of the entire community is extended to the sorrowing relatives. (Estherville Democrat, Estherville, IA, November 5, 1924)

Mrs. Chas. Johnson Passes
Mrs. Chas. Johnson, one of the most dearly loved of the early residents of Estherville, passed away at her home in this city, Friday, Oct. 31st [1924], her death being caused by heart failure. Mrs. Johnson came to Estherville with her husband and family from Keokuk in the spring of 1886 and had lived here continuously for the thirty-eight years that have passed since then.

The deceased, whose maiden name was Anna Boisen, was born in Nustrup, Schlesvig, Denmark on June 12, 1845 and was therefore past seventy-nine years of age at the time of her death. She came to America fifty-three years ago and was married at Keokuk to Chas. Johnson. They made their home there until they moved to Estherville. Five children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Johnson, three sons and two daughters. Her husband and the three sons have preceded her in death. The two daughters are Mrs. George Bale and Mrs. Mathilda Troyer of this city, the latter having made her home with her mother for the past few months, and for a number of years Mrs. Johnson has been with either one or other of her daughters. Besides the daughters, a twin brother still lives in Denmark.

Funeral services were held at the home this afternoon at 2 o'clock in charge of Rev. Wm. Whittle of Grace Episcopal church and burial was made in Oak Hill cemetery. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, Iowa, November. 5, 1924)
