Essie was the daughter of Etta H. Johnson and Elijah Collins. She was educated in the Houston County School System. She was a member of Piney Grove Baptist Church in Kathleen, Georgia. She was actively involved in her community, helping others in need.
She was married to Johnny Kirkland. She was preceded in death by 7 brothers: L.W. Johnson, Willie Johnson Jr, Freddie Lee Johnson, Willie B. Johnson, J.C. Johnson, John Lee Johnson and Robert Johnson; 2 sisters: Rosetta Willis and Florence Bagley; 1 son: Hodges Richardson; and 1 granddaughter: Janet Delores Richardson.
