Margaret Johnson Clark, 75, of Erie, Pennsylvania, died Wednesday, April 18, 2007.

She was born in Booneville, Mississippi on August 1, 1931, daughter of the late Oscar Johnson and Lula Bush Johnson.

Mrs. Clark was a 1948 Graduate of Corinth High School. Shortly after graduation, she relocated to Erie, Pa. where she began her family and raised nine children and two grandchildren, following the death of her daughter Brenda.

Now residing in Erie, Mrs. Clark gained a repetition as a "mother to the community" as result of her service to the community. In addition to raising her own nine children and two grandchildren, Mrs. Clark found time to be actively involved in the educational, social and cultural development of all of them. She volunteered as President of the Parent Advisory Board for the Gannon University Upward Bound Program during the tenures of Beary, Peggy, Alvin, Denise, Linda and Jacqueline (which covers 1962 through 1982); she served on the Board of Directors of the Booker T. Washington Center (from about 1984-1992); and countless other community-based organizations with which she participated, including membership with the Ozeil Temple #317 serving as Chaplin & Trustee; the Auxiliary of the American Legion Post 700; Eastern Stars and the Soulsville and Poisettes Women's Bowling League.

Mrs. Clark was an active member of the Morning Star Baptist Church of Erie Pa., for better than thirty years, where she served the church faithfully during her tenure in numerous capacities. Mrs. Clark served on the Mother's Board; the Scholarship Committee; the Kitchen Committee; as a Sunday School Teacher; and worked diligently as a God-fearing woman to improve the house of worship and had become a Chartered Member of Morning Star Baptist Church.

Mrs. Clark gained much notoriety in the community for her superb cooking, with her famous banana puddings, sweet potato pies, egg custards and delicious chocolate cakes as her trademark desserts.

But her fried chicken wasn't "nothing" to laugh at.

Mrs. Clark took a lot of pride in feeding your family well and anyone else she cooked for.

Mrs. Clark also had a well deserved repetition as an out-spoken advocate of her perception of truth and fairness. She would convey her message to any and everyone, including City Mayors, Preachers, Teachers, and the children in her home and in the community in search of justice for all. It was her spirit of free expression that proved contagious to the eleven children that she raised, the four nephews and one niece that grew up around her. She also inspired many of her friends to speak out for justice and fairness. Mrs. Clark demonstrated immense maternal love and compassion and an astute sense of parental guidance that had many young mothers seeking parenting training from her, which gave her another chance to speak her mind, and Period!

Margaret Clark was preceded in death by her husband Alvin L. Clark Sr., her sister Jeanette (Ba) Johnson-Gaines, her daughter Brenda L. (Cookie) Clark Moye, her youngest daughter Jacqueline (Mam) Clark, her grandson Larry (Yammy) Stribling, Jr, and Life-Companion Johnnie Vellines.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her uncle Jim Johnson, Sr., Toledo, Ohio, Three Aunts, Zera Hastings, Gwendale Thompson, all of Booneville, Miss., four sons, Beary W. (Pee-Wee) Clark (Shirley), Odester L. (Beaver) Clark (Morgan), Bryan E. Clark (Karen) all of Erie and Alvin L. (Ricky) Clark, of Jackson, Miss; three daughters, Peggy J. Clark Stribling and Denise T. (Tiny) Clark both of Flint, Mich., Linda J. (Poo-Jack) Clark of Erie and a step daughter Cleatis Harris of Mebane, N.C.; two grandchildren who she helped raise, Monique S. Moye Winston, Esq., (Kenny) of Houston, Texas; and Stefan Andre' Moye of Hawaii, four nephews, Oscar (Butchie) Johnson, Lester (Chip) Johnson (Helen), Minister Dwight (Poo-Poo) Johnson (Lavita), and Kevin Johnson, one niece Tina Johnson all of Erie; her stepmother Carrie Johnson Stokes of Erie, her brother Minister Jackie Kemp Jones of Erie, and a host of grandchildren and community kin.

Friends may call at the Burton Funeral Home, 602 West 10th Street, Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. and may attend services at Morning Star Baptist Church, 327 East 23rd Street on Wednesday at 1:00 p.m.

Burial will follow at the Erie Cemetery.
