Helen Evelyn Goetschel (nee Johnson), 98 went home to be with the Lord on August 6, 2010, having lived a rich and remarkable life.

Helen was born on September 10, 1911 in Joliet, IL, the youngest child of the late John and Emma Johnson. Helen grew up in the Ridgewood area and lived there until moving to Wisconsin in 1934 where she and Bob were married. Their first years together saw many different homes as Bob worked for the Army Corps of Engineers on the locks and dams up and down the Mississippi River. During the war years, they lived in many locations on the east coast as far down as Key West, FL. Returning to the Joliet area in 1945, they settled in the home where Helen lived until her death. Their love of travel took them to 50 states by car, sometimes two or three trips a year. Helen kept meticulous records in the form of her "trip books" in which she recorded every detail of their travels. In later years, Helen would enjoy pouring over the yellowing pages of these books and reliving wonderful memories of the great Redwoods, the Arizona desert, and their beloved Rhode Island where they lived for two months in a house so close to the ocean that "we were always wiping the ocean spray off the windows", and hundreds of other memories captured forever in her beloved scrap books. We children were privileged to have shared some of those years with her, and were honored to be at her bedside as she was called home by her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Robert "Bob" Goetschel, her daughter Karen Spencer, two sisters, Alice Weiss and Frances Johnson and her grandson, Shawn Gunter.

She is survived by her son, Lloyd (Lyn) Goetschel and daughter Patricia (Fred) Baeza both of Plainfield. Helen was a proud Grandmother of Steven (Teresa) Spencer of Aurora, IL, Susan (Ted) Adrien of Joliet, IL, Tom (Tara) Goetschel of Joliet, IL, Jeffrey (Jamie) Goetschel of Manhattan, IL, Scott Goetschel of Plainfield, IL, Amiee (Dan) Divane of Naperville, IL, Ross Gunter of Braidwood, IL, Tracy Gunter of Chicago, IL and Aaron Gunter of Jacksonville, Fl. Helen was a proud Great-Grandmother of Zachary, Matthew and Lauren Goetschel, Katherine and Christopher Adrien, Haylie and Brett Wensel, Asia, Stephanie and Tayler Gunter, Ashleigh and Tyler Goetschel, Kissandra Gunter, Noel Pallones and Shawn Asia Gunter.

A Celebration to honor Helen's life will occur on Friday, August 13, 2010 at 11:00AM at Blackburn-Giegerich-Sonntag Funeral Home, 1500 Black Road, Joliet, IL. Interment Woodlawn Memorial Park.
