Marian Johnson Baker 9/9/1933 ~ 5/5/2006

Marian Johnson Baker, 72, passed away on May 5, 2006 after a prolonged struggle with cancer

She was born on September 9, 1933 to Marion Kenney and Lois Webb Johnson. Marian attended BYU and married to Merlin Baker in the Salt Lake Temple on August 20, 1952. The couple moved to Chicago where Marian's husband attended the University of Chicago Law School. An avid reader, Marian loved learning and took college courses throughout her life. Some of her children's fondest memories are of their mother reading aloud and memorizing poems with them. Marian was also an accomplished pianist and organist who taught her family to value great music as well as literature.

As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she served in many church positions. She also volunteered for community service projects like Festival of Trees and making quilts for humanitarian projects. From 1976-79, Marian served with her husband while he presided as president to the Canada-Halifax Mission. Her missionary service in Canada was one of the great highlights of her life.

Marian and Merlin later served together for more than three years as Church Addiction Recovery missionaries. A master quilter, Marian spent many hours creating quilts and particularly loved appliqu‚. Two of her quilts received "Best of Show" and "Viewer's Choice" ribbons at the Springville Art Museum Show. Some of her quilts were also featured on the covers of quilt books. Marian's life was one of unfailing service to others. A woman of great empathy and generosity of spirit, she searched out those in need and gave selflessly. She was a friend to many who were friendless. She cared for the sick and dying. She spent countless hours helping and encouraging others, even when she was very ill.

Marian is preceded in death by her parents and a grandson, Michael.

She is survived by her three brothers, Maurice, Brant, and Ray Johnson; her loving husband Merlin, and their seven children: Bruce, Michelle (Kevin) Miller, Allyson (Greg) Kesler, Loring (Paul) Morgan, Jonathan, Shannon (Jerry) Moore and Christopher (Makaria). She is also survived by 26 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 8, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at the Valley View 12th Ward, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2125 East Evergreen Ave., (3435 South) Salt Lake City.
