Sarah Jane Johnson was born the third of six children to Harrison Johnson and Edith Theone at Warsaw, Benton County, Missouri. Edith died sometime between 1849 and 1852 and Harrison remarried and had four more daughters.

On 7 April 1858, Sarah married John Bishop (originally Bischoff), a German, who had emigrated from Bremen with his family in 1845. Sarah and John had 13 children who lived to adulthood. Sarah died on 3 March 1929 in Springdale, Stevens County, Washington. Her body was sent Roseburg, Douglas County, Oregon, so that she could be buried next to John. She was buried 8 March 1929. BISHOP, Sarah Jane - Age 87. Home was at Springdale. Survived by five daughters, Mrs. Mary Leonard of California, Mrs. Sarah Taylor of Springdale, Mrs. Alice Kendreck, Mrs. C. S. Addison, Mrs. Minnie Winford, all from Oregon; five sons, F. H. of Spokane, C. H. of Oregon, W. E. of Walla Walla, Louis of Idaho, S. K. of Pomeroy; 30 grandchildren. Member of Relief Corps of Roseburg, Ore. Body will be sent to Roseburg, Ore., Tuesday evening for funeral and interment. Hazen & Jaeger in charge.
