Clara was the daughter of Fred Ehlers and Pauline Benkowski.

She had eleven siblings: Martha, Lydia Augusta, Emma Pauline, Henry August, Fredie William, William Albert, Albert Edward, Edward Ernest, Lillian Lydia, and Herman Herbert.

Clara married Fritz Johnson on December 26, 1909.

They were the parents of five children: Irene Louise, Evelyn Pearl, Howard Russell and two infants.
