"AXEL JOHNSON DIES AT HOME
Brief Illness Causes Death of Well Known Local Man Here Sunday
Axel E. Johnson, 540 Jefferson street, proprietor of a shoe repair shop and proficient in other fields, died after a brief illness at his home Sunday morning at 11:10 o'clock. Mr. Johnson was first taken ill Tuesday of last week, but his condition had not been considered serious with his death yesterday unexpected.
Mr. Johnson, who was known by many for the skill of his trade, a job he had followed since 14 years of age, was probably better known for his artistry in other lines.
Practically the entire back yard of his home on Jefferson street, where he had resided continuously for 31 years, was used as an elaborate rock and flower garden.
Conspicuous in the garden was a large pool which was backgrounded by a miniature lighthouse constructed by Mr. Johnson. A light at the top of this building played upon the fish pond which Mr. Johnson had stocked with crappies, sunfish, and other species. He combined this hobby with another of fishing and the catch from these expeditions kept the fish pond stocked.
Mr. Johnson's youth was spent at Kisa, Ostergotlan, Sweden, where his birth occurred Aug. 5, 1887. He was wed to Ellen Marie Johnson, April 19, 1917, at Rock Island. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church.
Those of the family surviving are the wife and three children, Mrs. Donald Terpening, Cameron; Marcel Johnson and Mrs. Ray Nemeth, both of Galesburg. There are two brothers, Carl and Jacob Johanson, both in Sweden. Five grandchildren also survive.
Services are to be held Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock at the Kimber and West mortuary where friends may call tonight. Burial will be in Memorial Park."
