Albert "Bert" Johns, 78, a resident of the Wenatchee Valley since 1951, passed away Sept. 5, 2002, at Central Washington Hospital. He struggled courageously for many years with multiple health problems.
He was born Nov. 7, 1923, in Carbon, OK to Albert Sr. and Donnie Marie Johns. He was raised and attended school in Oklahoma.
He served in the CCC at Powell, WY where he met his wife Nathalia Jane Moore. Bert and Jane were married Dec. 24, 1942 in Billings, MT. In 1943 they moved to Port Orchard, then to Winthrop in 1945 and settled in the Wenatchee area in 1951.
Bert was a journeyman welder, mechanic, machinist, and blacksmith. He was employed at the Bremerton Naval Shipyard during World War II, worked at Twisp-Wagner Lumber, and many years at Pybus Steel in Wenatchee, retiring in 1978.
Bert was an outdoorsman and loved camping, hunting, and most of all fishing. He taught his children and grandchildren to fish and love the outdoors.
His parents, two brothers, and a sister preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife Jane, of the family home; two sons: Cal and wife, Terry, of Chelan; Rick and wife, Penne, of Deming; daughter, Trudy Ferguson and husband, Bruce, of Everson; brother, Jim Johns, of McAlester, OK; sister, Gladys Luchak, of Sacramento, CA; six granddaughters: Paula Sherrell and husband, Jimmy, Dana Thomas and husband, Mike, Shelby Brunson and husband, Roger, Pamela Ferguson, Nicole Johns and Sara Ferguson; great-grandchildren Drew and Elliott Thomas, Brooke, Jade and Brynn Sherrell, Spencer and Haley Brunson.
Commemoration Services will be held at the graveside in Evergreen Memorial Park on Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 10, 2002 at 1:00 p.m. with pastor Paul Palumbo officiating. Visitation will be at Telford's on Monday, Sept. 9, 2002, from 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Friends who wish may make memorial donations in his name to Wenatchee Valley Senior Center or area, Lupus, Macular Degeneration, or Diabetes Foundations.
Arrangements are by Telford's Chapel of the Valley, East Wenatchee.
