Gladys Judith Johannsen,, 98 of Pleasant Valley, Iowa, died Monday, February 8, 2010, at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf, Iowa. Services in celebration of her long life will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, February 15, at Weerts Funeral Home, Kimberly at Jersey Ridge, Davenport, with Rev. Jim Tully officiating. Burial will be in Fairmount Cemetery, Davenport. Memorials may be made to the family. Mrs. Johannsen was born in 1912 in Davenport, to William and Grace Westphal. Following her graduation with the class of '32 from Davenport Central, she attended Brown Business College and earned her degree in business. She married Howard W. Johannsen Sr., in the "Little Brown Church" in Nashua, Iowa. He preceded her in death. For 21 years, she worked as an executive secretary to the National Sales Manager for Bendix, retiring in 1977, from Litton. She worked numerous years for M. L. Parker department store, Davenport, in the fine china and crystal department. She also worked at the Davenport Nataorium. She enjoyed going for summer drives in her Pontiac convertible, visiting many of the local restaurants along the way. Gardening, bird watching and roller-skating were also favorite pastimes. Her only family surviving is her grandson, Jeffrey Johannsen, of Des Moines, Iowa. In addition to her husband and her parents, she was preceded in death by her companion, Gerald R. Strait on january 22, 2009; a son, Howard Wm. Johannsen, Jr.; granddaughter, Cheri Johannsen; grandson, Kirk Van William Johannsen; daughter-in-law, Andrea Kay Johannsen; mother-in-law, Erma Johannsen; and father-in-law, William Johannsen.
