Roma L. Jensen, age 79, returned home to the loving arms of her eternal companion, LaMar, March 14, 2009 in Cedar City, Utah. She was born March 31, 1929 in Parowan, Utah to Rulon McGregor and Mary Welch Lyman. She was born on Easter Sunday. She was the second of five children.
Roma attended Parowan High School and graduated as Valedictorian of her class. She married LaMar G. Jensen on June 30, 1947. They were sealed as a family at the Provo Temple on July 7, 1974. They had three children: William Gary (Ruthana) Jensen, Bonnie Jeanne (Steven) Thayer, and Terry Lee (Ron) Hirschi. They have 17 grandchildren and the 18th great-grandchild will be born in May. Roma and LaMar were married for 58 years. He passed away in 2005.
Roma and LaMar ran the Roller Skating rink in Parowan, along with a coffee shop. Later they opened the LaRoma Café. LaMar cooked, Roma was the waitress.
Roma went back to college, attending the College of Southern Utah, and finished her B.S. degree in three years, graduating once again as the Valedictorian of her class. She earned her Master's degree from Utah State University in 1969, and her Doctorate from BYU on August 16, 1974.
She taught elementary education in Parowan and Cedar City for 16 years, and she was the principal of Enoch Elementary and Parowan Elementary before becoming the Director of Elementary Education for Iron County School District March 15, 1991. Roma was passionate about getting all children to enjoy reading, and many of her former students still remember her with love.
Roma always loved reading, music, theater and her family. Over the years she crocheted dozens of beautiful afghans. She and LaMar loved Christmas and received a plaque for best decorated home for several years.
Always a person with lots of community spirit, Roma served on the Little Salt Lake committee in Parowan, and was on the Heritage Foundation. She was always generous with her musical ability. She was the Choir Director, played the piano for Sacrament Meeting, and in her work as an educator, helped many children discover music.
Her family was always very important to Roma. Theirs was a close and loving family. Many evenings were spent gathered around the piano, singing together, and enjoying each other's company.
Roma is survived by their three children, 17 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, her sisters Mary Gae Evans and Ruth Thurston. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lamar, her parents, Rulon McGregor and Mary Lyman, her infant brother Merrill and her brother Mack Lyman.
Funeral services will be held on March 19, 2009 the 2nd Ward Chapel in Parowan (87 W. Center). Interment will be in the Parowan Cemetery under the direction of Southern Utah Mortuary.
