Franklin Clair Jensen 1940 ~ 2007
Our father, grandfather, husband and friend passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on Dec. 30 of a brain hemorrhage after enjoying a beautiful day bicycling in St. George with his friends. He was 67 years young. Clair was the first of three children born to James Clair Jensen and Reta Nielson on Dec. 17, 1940 in Elsinore, Utah. His family later moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, where he graduated from high school. While attending BYU he met his sweetheart, Sandra Lee Shupe. They were married Dec. 9, 1961 and had two children, Justin Clair and Kellie JaNell.
Clair then went on to graduate from BYU. As an outdoor enthusiast he began work at the Division of Wildlife Resources, rising to the position of Regional Director of the DWR for Southern Utah. He finished his career in 1999, having spanned 30+ years. Clair made a lifetime of memories; a favorite was when he was selected to carry the 2002 Olympic torch for a stretch through St. George on its way to Salt Lake City. He was thrilled with the opportunity as he ran like the athlete he was. His desire for exercise stayed with him throughout life which, at retirement, evolved into the passion for biking he had until the last.
Outside of family duties if Clair had a free moment he was either covering cycling matters or he was on his bike. He became active with community leaders in promoting bicycling and was instrumental in establishing safe bike lanes on the streets of Cedar City. Saturday's organized rides with members of the Color Country Cycling Club were among the many highlights of his very active life, as well as the really big rides and races around the western states region. Then, this summer he had absolutely the best time in France riding with a friend, sometimes through the rain, but what a great time they had! Clair was a friend to many, offering assistance, service, pointers, and words of encouragement to his numerous close friends as well as to those he didn't know so well. He thoroughly enjoyed playing with his grandchildren, who will now miss him intensely, as will the rest of his family and the many friends and acquaintances who had the pleasure of knowing him.
He leaves behind his devoted wife of 46 years, Sandra, their two children, Justin (Betsy) of Salt Lake City; and Kellie Halterman (Mark) of Parowan; and grandchildren, Chase, Sean, Whitney, and Jacob Halterman, in addition to his father James, and his sister Ricki Sue.
He was preceded in death by his mother Reta and his brother Calvin. A memorial service will be held at 12 noon on Sat. January 5, 2008 at the Cedar West Stake Center, 1110 W. 725 S. Cedar City. Friends may call on the family between 10- 11:30. Interment follows in the Parowan City Cemetery under the direction of Southern Utah Mortuary.
