The people of Dana were startled last Saturday evening by the announcement that the wife of Capt. Cale Bales (Naoma Bales) had dropped dead. Mr. Bales, who resides about 3 miles southeast of Dana, and his wife went to town that day to attend a social. His wife, who had always been in the best of health, suddenly took sick on the road, becoming faint and dizzy. Mr. Bales wanted to turn around and go back home, but she objected, telling him she would be all right in a few minutes. She apparently got better, and they drove on to town. They stopped at Carl Temple's, and just as she went to get out of the sleigh, she had a second attack. Mr. Bales had to get assistance to help him move her in the house. Mr. Bales immediately started for a doctor against her protest, she claiming that it was only an attack of the croup and would get over it directly. The doctor came and prescribed, but she died before she swallowed the first dose. The doctor said her death was due to congestion of the lungs. Mrs. Bales was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Jenks, deceased, and was about 55 years of age. She was Mr. Bales' second wife. She had no children. She leaves 2 brothers and 3 sisters. A kinder or better hearted woman never lived. She was a Christian lady, and loved and respected by all.

Naoma was married first to Jonathan Newbanks on March 6, 1873. Her marriage to Caleb Bales was October 30, 1878.
