1933 ~ 2013
"There is no place like home!" That has been my motto for most of my adult life. Home is wherever my wonderful wife, Judy, resides - for she has made my life heavenly! I love her, and even in my last weeks at home I tried to show my love to her by being a grateful patient while she lovingly cared for me with the help of our children and the wonderful people at The Good Shepherd Hospice Care.
On June 29, 1933 I was born to Elmer and Gladys Jenkins of Midvale, Utah. They provided me a stable home life and strong support so it was easy to grow up happy about life. Sports and student government at Jordan High provided many great friendships and memories that have lasted through the years. Columbia University and the Air Force allowed me to learn, travel, and play tennis, but a blind date with Judy Beckstead in 1958 began the most wonderful years of my life. We have lived in Salt Lake City all 54 years of our married life. We were blessed with 8 children, two of whom, Janie and Jonathon, preceded me in death. My other children are Julie (Rob), David (Sandra), JoEllen (Rand), Jennifer (Roger), Cindy (Russ) and Mark.
I have worked in sales most of my life and have spent many retired years taking classes at both the University of Utah and the Salt Lake Community College. Racquetball, yoga, and history classes were among my favorites. I have loved learning in every stage of my life. Truly some of my greatest joys have been sharing what I have learned with those around me.
I've viewed life as an adventure, and have tried hard to enjoy the journey. Snow skiing, tennis, squash, racquetball, fishing, walking, theatre and symphony attendance, thrift store shopping, library browsing, serving others and playing with grandkids have filled my life. It has been said that there is "Joy in your posterity" and I have found this to be true.
Love is an action word to me, and I have always tried to show my love by taking action. Providing for my family as well as visiting with friends, family and even strangers has been a great pleasure. I've worked on being a great listener and have found my best investments are those I've made in the relationships I have with the people in my life.
I enjoyed my time serving in all my callings as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Whether serving in the bishopric or as a home teacher, I have enjoyed the opportunity to love those around me. Jesus Christ is my exemplar, and throughout my life I have tried my best to follow Him.
If you are reading this, then you will know that I am onto my next great adventure. I am excited, I am ready, but I will miss my wife and will be waiting for her, because "There is no place like home!" and Judy is my home... If you would like to come and celebrate my life with my family, a viewing will be held Tuesday February 5, 2013 at Holbrook Mortuary (3251 South 2300 East) from 6:00-8:00 p.m. as well as Wednesday at the Valley View Stake Center located at 2245 East 3900 South from 9:30-10:30 a.m. My Life Celebration will begin at 11:00 a.m. Interment at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park to follow.
