Taught 50 Years; Set Final Rites
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in McNary Memorial Chapel for Mrs. Mary J. Baker, 74, school teacher in Colusa County for 30 years – most of that time as a member of the Colusa High School faculty – who died late yesterday in the Woodland Clinic Hospital.
Residents of the community, the students at Colusa High School in particular, were saddened by the news of Mrs. Baker's death.
Mrs. Baker, a member of the Colusa High School faculty for 36 years, retired in 1947 but returned to the school as part time librarian in 1948. Since 1952 she has been on full time duty at the school, in charge of the library and study hall and also acting advisor on publication of the Colus, the high school yearbook.
Mrs. Baker, a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, held a life teaching certificate and, since 1921, had taught hundreds of Colusa High students U.S. and world history and the functions of government. Friends in the teaching profession referred to her as a "remarkable woman' who endeared herself to the students and fellow faculty members.
Prior to teaching in Colusa, Mrs. Baker was a teacher in the Bridgeport School in Sycamore, starting in 1907.
Despite failing health, she continued her duties at Colusa high school until last November 11th. She was taken to the clinic last Wednesday and it was known she had little chance of recovery.
She was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Jeffreys, early day residents here, and was born near Colusa, December 17, 1882.
Mrs. Baker was a member of the Presbyterian Church and Colusa's Business and Professional Women's Club.
Her survivors are a brother, William Lawrence Jeffreys of Colusa, and nieces and nephews, Inez Croskey of Daly City, Margaret Leake of San Mateo, Major Temple Jeffreys of the U.S. Army, Texas, and William A. McCloud of Colusa. She was a cousin of Miss Olive Percy Davis of Sycamore.
The services Thursday in McNary Memorial Chapel will be followed by interment in Grand Island Cemetery, near Grimes.
