Dr. Robert Mitchell Jaye, age 81, passed away peacefully on his birthday with his family by his side on Wednesday, October 16, 2013. He was born October 16, 1932, in Bay Minette, Alabama, to James and Grace McLain Jaye.

Dr. Jaye was a resident of Walton County. He was Baptist by faith and a member of the First Baptist Church of DeFuniak Springs, where he served as pastor from 1973 to 1982, having pastored numerous churches during the 50 years of his ministry as a pastor. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving his country in the United States Navy as a flight gunner, having served in numerous combat missions. He went to William Carey College, receiving his Bachelors Degree in history and philosophy. He also attended New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, receiving his Bachelor of Divinity and Master of Theology, and Luther Rice Seminary, receiving his Doctorate of Ministry. He received a Doctorate of Divinity at Ridgedale Theological Seminary, studied and researched at Oxford University in England, and served on mission trips to South Africa and Ecuador.

Dr. Jaye taught a Comparative Religions class at Okaloosa Walton Junior College, served as an adjunct professor at what is now Baptist College of Florida, was Chaplain of VQ Squadron, and served as supply minister at Euchee Valley Presbyterian Church. He also pioneered a school for developmentally disabled children in Tatnall County, Georgia.

Dr. Jaye was preceded in death by his parents, James and Grace McLain Jaye; an infant brother; one brother, James Monroe Jaye, Jr.; and his first wife, Lunell Duck Jaye, the mother of his children.

Dr. Jaye is survived by his loving wife, Janet Brannon Jaye, of DeFuniak Springs, Florida; four children, Robert M. Jaye, Jr. and wife Karen of Gainesville, Florida, Davis M. Jaye and wife Susan of Naperville, Illinois, Jenny Gomillion and husband Larry, and Jeremy Saunders and wife Rhonda of DeFuniak Springs, Florida; one brother, Thomas D. Jaye and wife Sally of Crawfordville, Florida; and eight grandchildren, Robert M. Jaye, III, Catherine Jaye, Chelsea Jaye, Anna Lunell Jaye, Grady Luke Gomillion, Allie Saunders, Annabelle Saunders and Amelia Saunders.

Visitation services: 10:00~11:00 AM, Friday, October 18, 2013, at First Baptist Church in DeFuniak Springs; 216 East Live Oak Avenue, DeFuniak Springs, Florida 32435.

Funeral services: 11:00 AM, Friday, October 18, 2013, at First Baptist Church, Dr. Bobby Tucker officiating, with military honors by the United States Navy.

Burial: at the Cross Roads Cemetery, 9551 Highway 138, Bay Minette, Alabama 36507 at 4:00 PM, Friday, October 18, 2013.

Pallbearers: Robert M. Jaye, Jr., Davis M. Jaye, Robert M. Jaye, III, Harold Duck, Danny Edwards, and Grady Luke Gomillion. Honorary pallbearers will be the past and present deacons of the First Baptist Church of DeFuniak Springs.
