Joyce Brooks: Junction City woman dies in Lexington Road crash
A Junction City woman was killed Wednesday afternoon when her car collided with another vehicle on Lexington Road just inside Danville city limits.Joyce Brooks, 60, of 188 E. Grubbs Lane, was pronounced dead on the scene by Boyle County Coroner Dr. James Ramey. The accident occurred about 12:45 p.m. near Cornerstone Assembly of God church. Witnesses told police that Brooks' 1998 Mercury Tracer was westbound when it veered across the center turning lane into the path of a northbound 2003 Chevrolet pickup truck driven by William Mike Hawkins. The vehicles struck each other on their front driver's sides.Hawkins, of Nicholasville, was taken to Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center for treatment and later released. Both drivers were wearing seat belts, and air bags in both vehicles deployed.Ramey said it remains a mystery why Brooks' car drifted into oncoming traffic. She did not suffer from any known health problems, did not have a cell phone, and alcohol or drugs were not a factor, Ramey said.Firefighters from Danville and Boyle County responded. The road was closed for about two hours.Brooks worked for several years at Giovanni's restaurant on Hustonville Road, where she was a cook, worked the sandwich line and manned the cash register. She was well-liked by customers and her co-workers, said Carol Wilson, who worked alongside Brooks for many years."We all loved her to death," Wilson said.Wilson added that Brooks was a Baptist who was "very dedicated to her church."Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Stith Funeral Home.
